CLIMATE-ADAPT

Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the 'average weather', or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. [1]
These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind. Climate in a wider sense is the state, including a statistical description, of the climate system. The classical period of time is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

RESIN project

The RESIN project [2] gives the following definition:

Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the average weather, or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. The classical period for averaging these variables is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization. [3]

Other International Definitions

UNISDR/IPCC

Climate is usually defined as the "average weather", or more rigorously, as the statistical description of the weather in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over periods of several decades (typically three decades as defined by WMO). [4]
These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind, but in a wider sense the "climate" is the description of the state of the climate system.

WMO

Climate: Synthesis of weather conditions in a given area, characterized by long-term statistics (mean values, variances, probabilities of extreme values, etc.) of the meteorological elements in that area. [7]

National Definitions

Australia

Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the “average weather,” or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands of years. [8]
The classical period is 3 decades, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Klimaat: gemiddeld weer over een lange periode. [10]

Brazil

Germany

Climate in the strict sense is defined as the statistical “average weather” that prevails in a region for a period ranging from months to thousands of years. [13]

The classic period of time (= normal climate period), as defined by the World meteorological organization (Wmo), is 30 years. The variables included are temperature, rainfall and wind.

Guatemala

Climate: A human construct developed to describe average, or mean weather. [15]

Honduras

Climate: The composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years. [16]

India

Climate:

Jamaica

Climate: The long-term average weather of a region, including typical weather patterns, the frequency and intensity of storms, cold spells and heat waves. [18]

Kiribati

Kanoan te bong: Tauan mwin kanoan te bong teuana ma teuana ni irekereke ma bwakan te karau, kabuebuen te aonnaba,te mwaitorotoro ao n aba ake itinanikun. [19]

Climate refers to the average temperatures, humidity, rainfall and winds in a region over long periods of time.

The Netherlands uses a period of 30 years to average the weather.
